We tried this and it does not work. We need to switch from verbal to physical. A couple of years ago, IKEA run an experiment in one of their shops: what happens if they’d turn controlled temperature up by 2 degrees. This triggers a physical sensation in the public that is way more powerful than just telling a story about kids and grandkids. Our empathy (or compassion) potential has been falling together with the raise of individualism, during the last 30–40 years. Even more so, if we ask people to be empathetic with members of their family who will likely outlive them. We need to repeatedly impose to people in control (policymakers, CEOs, institutional investors, etc.) physical sensations that mimics the changes in the environment to which their grandkids will be exposed? Why, for example, not imposing huge duties and taxes on hydrofluorocarbons, and all the other refrigerant gases that are used in air conditioners? Lots of changes would ensue: people will move less, fly less, and most of the measures you suggested in your article. Buildings will be built temperature efficient, lots of activities in open air, and reduction of direct thermal emissions from air conditioners. Sounds like a deal?
