This reminds me of the beautiful Marcel Mauss book The Gift where he analyzes gift giving in pre-industrial societies. The parallels between debt and gift receiving are very interesting as there is a fundamental difference that characterizes our society vs the more primitive ones: the Gift creates a debt situation at the initiative of the giver; instead, financial credit is extended at the initiative of the receiver.
