This has a quite simple solution: to tax Amazon as it should, and to close all the loopholes through which, for example, it paid no Federal tax in 2018 (vs USD 11.2bn profit). Amazon has also been named the ‘worst’ for aggressive tax avoidance in a study by Fair Tax Mark. It is in good company, with Apple, Facebook, Netflix, Microsoft, and others. Every year or so, we have the U.S. Congress meet to ‘painfully’ raise the debt ceiling. U.S. fiscal governance — under Trump, Obama, etc. — is tragically laughable. I would take any bets against those who think that this is going to change with Biden.
