If by “free society” you mean an enchanted world where supernatural powers make sure that your self-professed mantra of competition and free markets happens naturally then I agree with you. But this is not the real world, Dan. If you really want to have free trade and competition you need to have third institutions that prevent monopolies to form, that punish severely collusion, that limit the power of natural cartels. It would be great to live in a world where Amazon would self-impose penalties because it is too dominant or where banks would voluntary restrict their balance sheets because they self-assess themselves as too big. This is not the case, it is pure fantasy and I might add unfortunately so, because if governments only had to provide services to citizens then they would have the means to do so in a much better way than they currently did.
