I wish it were so, but chances are not, unfortunately. Societies are more and more polarised and within groups the median behaviour is increasingly extreme (something psychologists call ‘groupshift’). There is nothing in the life of that employee that sanctions her behaviours. At work, her manager did not show up talking to you. In her private life, she probably surrounds herself by similar, like-minded people — as it has become so easy nowadays with social media. Your episode is probably being her trophy right now among her circle of friends, that is how the world is now. So where you should put that energy that was mounting within yourself: of course with your kids. Reading your story I think of the many times I ponder how it is difficult nowadays to raise kids (my eight years old girl is only now starting to realise the asperities of the real world, and it is painful to watch). It is probably the most difficult time ever to raise kids. Shielding them completely is wrong, but is exposing them the reality of vulgarity and aggressiveness that seems to become so normal in media (TV and internet) the right way? I really don’t know.
