Although I like this paragraph, I think we should not generalise here, as it is done too often elsewhere. We need to understand that there is a difference between ‘capitalism’ and ‘neo-liberal — U.S. kind — capitalism’ and this distinction is crucial. If look back at the history, intellectual roots and practice of Capitalism, we would discover a system where the concept of community and cooperation is at the core of its foundations. It is not because the means of productions are privately owned and used to derive a profit that cooperation and sharing can’t exist. Refer to the works of Paul Samuelson and more recently Eric Beinhocker. So neo-liberalism is a choice, it is not a natural offspring of Capitalism. If we can’t overcome the simplistic, superficial binary approach of Capitalism vs. Socialism we will never be able to escape the neo-liberal trap.
